Modern Bathroom Lighting Definitions
- Spotlights – These lights are generally fitted flush to the ceiling or wall and focus on one section of the room. These are usually used in shower cubicles or above a basin or mirror.
- Chandeliers – A more extravagant styling of light that illuminate the whole room rather than one section. Usually placed in the centre of the room.
- Mirror lighting – Modern mirrors are now able to be kitted out with many great features, including LED lighting to illuminate your face as you get ready.

IP Ratings
On the product descriptions and packaging of bathroom lights you are likely to find an IP Rating. This is essentially a way of grading lighting by its resistance to pressure by solid objects and water. The table below outlines how you can easily decode the ratings:
For example: a light fitting with an IP10 Rating has protection against brushes with your hand but no protection against fluids.
Zones
One of the most important things to look out for when you’re looking for modern bathroom lighting is whether the fitting has a specified zone of the bathroom that it needs to be placed in. Due to the IP Rating of the light fitting, some lights can only be placed in specific places. There are 4 different zones: Zone 0, Zone 1, Zone 2, and Outside Zones.
Zone 0
This zone is inside the bath or shower itself. This means that light fittings used here must be fully waterproof (at least IP67) and have a low voltage for obvious safety reasons.
Zone 1
This is the area above the bath or shower (up to a height of 2.25m from the floor). Again, an IP Rating of IP45 is the minimum, and most shower lights are rated accordingly.
Zone 2
Zone 2 encompasses 0.6m from the edge of your bath, shower or basin. Since water is still able to splash onto lights in this zone, a IP Rating of at least IP44 is recommended.
Outside Zones
Any area outside of Zones 0, 1 and 2 is able to have lights fitted with any IP Rating as long as it is not in reach of any water jets. However in bathrooms, we reccomend that you consider opting for the lights with the highest IP Rating possible to ensure your bathroom is safe.
