Shower Guide: How To Choose The Right Model For Your Bathroom

Showers are perhaps the most important part of our bathrooms (toilet aside). They can fit in any size bathroom, whether its a family bathroom or smaller en-suite, and are a lot more convenient than baths which can take up a huge amount of space. Looking for the right shower model for your bathroom? This is Bathshop321’s comprehensive shower guide to help you find the right model for your bathroom.

Certain models of shower will not work under certain water pressures, so before you even start looking at showers you need to know what water pressure you have in your home. B&Q have put together a very handy guide all about what water pressure is and we recommend taking a look at this to work out what your water pressure is. Once you know this information, the search for your shower can be narrowed down to save you time.

Un-vented hot water system

This type of water system has no need for a cold water tank in your home and instead consists of a hot water cylinder that is connected directly to your mains cold water supply, where the water is heated by a boiler or immersion heater. This system has great water pressure and you generally get good flow rates from your taps and shower so that a pump is not needed.

Combination boiler

Combi-boilers heat water on demand whenever hot water is required through taps and mixer showers. It is connected directly to the mains system at a high pressure and therefore there is no need for a pump.

Gravity fed-system

Gravity-fed water systems generally operate at a lower water pressure than the other systems and the only way to boost pressure is to install an extra water pump. It works by having a cold water tank in your loft/attic and a hot water cylinder, in which the water is heated by a boiler or immersion heater.

Once you know your water system and pressure, you can use that information to narrow down your search for the right shower. Specific shower models will have certain water pressure requirements so it is very important to look out for this information before you buy. But what is the difference between shower types? Here’s a quick rundown:

Electric Showers

Electric showers are the most economical choice for your home, so if you want to save your pennies and cut back on your bills, they are the right choice for you. This is because they only heat the amount of hot water that you are actually using. Check out the Home Of Ultra Chic 650 Slimline Shower which is compact and stylish.

Shower Panels

Shower panels look fantastic and save space thanks to their all-in-one function. There are plenty of stunning designs for your bathroom or wet room, and they can be placed above a shower bath or  in their own enclosure. Often these shower panels will feature built-in body jets for the ultimate showering experience. One of our favourites (and a bestseller) is the Deluxe White Dream Shower Panel – now with 72% off! Available now for just £139! RRP £499.

Power Showers

Power showers are designed to give you maximum performance from your water system. They work with low pressure, gravity-fed systems but are not to be piped directly to the cold water mains supply. Inside the units there is an integrated pump that will boost the water and mixes it to deliver a powerful and invigorating shower.

Mixer Showers

Mixer showers give you the freedom to completely customise your desired temperature of water flow to suit you. Provided you have at least a medium level of water pressure, a mixer shower is the perfect, minimalist choice to complete your bathroom. These showers do not require bulky equipment to make them work; you simply use the valves to control your water temperature, which makes these showers practical and allows you more space to shower in comfort. Check out the Square Thermostatic Cool Touch Chrome Plated Full Shower Kit, which is an incredible £97!

Wireless Digital Showers

Wireless digital showers are the height of contemporary showering. Digital showers allow you to set your desired temperature easily – before you even step into your showering area!. Supplied with a remote control, you remotely set the controls and the shower can even notify you when it’s at the perfect temperature for you to enter! No more fiddling with mixer taps or valves! These showers are more pricey than their counterparts, but if it’s luxury you’re after, you won’t find much better.

Finally, you’re going to need to choose your matching enclosures and/or shower trays. Bathshop321 stocks a massive range of quadrant, offset quadrant, corner, walk-in, pivot and bi-fold shower enclosures, alongside some of the best shower trays. We advise you to take a look at the range from Just-Trays, which feature stunning slate effect trays and so much more – all manufactured right here in the UK!

Alternatively if you are placing your shower above your bath, we have an affordable range of bath screens to protect your floor from water splashes.

So there you have, our simple shower guide to getting the right model for your bathroom!
