A toilet is just a toilet right? Wrong! There are so many different types of toilets on the market and it is important to explore all the options available to you as the type you end up choosing can change the whole design of your bathroom. So let’s talk through all the different aspects of toilets to help you make your decision.

The Three Main Types Of Toilets

There are three main types of toilets that you need to look out for:

Wall Hung

Wall hung toilets are pretty self-explanatory; they hang on the wall without the need for a pedestal. The great thing about wall hung toilets is that you can have it installed at the height that you choose (and don’t worry – the frames are incredibly sturdy so your toilet won’t fall off the wall)!

Close Coupled

Close coupled toilets are the most popular type of toilet on the market right now. The cistern and pan are connected in one compact unit, such as the toilets pictured below. Most modern toilets are close coupled.

Back To Wall

Back to wall toilets are very similar to wall hung toilets, apart from the act that they are not suspended from a wall but instead are fixed to the floor. The cistern and pipes are concealed behind the wall or a furniture unit, just like wall hung toilets. Back to wall toilets are perfect if you are looking to save space in a smaller bathroom.

Styles Of Toilets

In addition to the three main types of toilet, there are a few more types of design within those categories that you can use to differentiate toilets.

Corner toilets

Corner toilets are designed to make the most of whatever space you have to work with.

High Level

High level toilets are old fashioned toilets that have the cistern placed high above the pan. These toilets use a chain flush and the cistern is connected to the pan by a long pipe. Perfect for traditional bathrooms and period properties. One of our favourite designs is the Synergy Ellio High Level Toilet, click here to take a look!

Low Level

Low level toilets are simply high level style toilets but with the cistern placed lower down the wall. Often the chain flush can be replaced with a handle as the cistern in not difficult to reach. Again these toilets look great in classically styled bathrooms and older properties. We love the Tavistock Victoria Toilet, click here to check it out.

Comfort Raised

When a toilet is described as comfort raised, it means that the toilet pan sits at a higher point than it would on a standard toilet. Although this seems like an unnecessary change to most people, comfort height toilets are very useful for those with back or knee problems and the elderly, as the raised height reduces the distance you need to lower your body to sit down. Click here to browse our range.

Concealed Cisterns

This is only an option for back to wall or wall hung toilet pans. The cistern is concealed either behind a toilet unit, vanity unit or the wall itself to create a minimalist look. The only issue with concealed cisterns is that it makes it difficult to perform maintenance tasks as all the plumbing is hidden behind the wall. This is important to consider when choosing a location for your toilet.

There is also plenty of short projection toilets to choose from too!
